The Drive Toward Joy is the Drive Toward Life

Updated: Jun 7, 2019

In Breathwork, I talk a lot about moments of connection - love, joy and peace. These moments are unique to each of us but they are universal truths that connect us to our instincts - our true self. The give us clarity and peace. In her beautifully joyful book, Joyful: The Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness,

author and designer, Ingrid Fetell Lee shares what she has learned on her 10-year quest to understand joy.

In her recent Ted Talk, "Where Joy Hides - and How to Find It" Ingrid shares that, "Happiness is about how we feel over time. Joy is about feeling good in the moment, right now. And this was interesting to me because as a culture we are obsessed with the pursuit of happiness, and yet in the process we kind of overlook joy."

She believes, and I 100% agree, that “joy is directly connected to our fundamental instinct for survival. On the most basic level, the drive toward joy is the drive toward life.”

I think this drive is one of the reasons Joy Cho, and her Oh Joy! blog and products have such a connection with people. Aesthetically, they make you feel hopeful and alive.

To find joy in your daily life: breathe, be present, notice the colorful, the playful, the twinkling abundance of life around you.
