Our breath has the unique ability to switch our nervous system from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic - from a state of stress to a state of relaxation. We breath all day without thought, but when we focus our breath through Breathwork meditation we can relax both our mind and body. For those who suffer with chronic pain this dual benefit is very important as chronic pain causes the mind to be in a state of chronic stress.
The steady release of stress hormones that result from a state of chronic stress only further exacerbates chronic pain by raising blood pressure, tightening muscles and causing shallow breathing. Breathwork can break this cycle of chronic stress and pain by relaxing both the mind and body.
In my Just Breathe with Eileen Fein podcast we talk through the science and benefits of Breathwork for chronic pain and take you through a mini guided Breathwork session. If you are suffering with chronic pain, talk to your doctor about Breathwork and if it is a good fit for you as part of your overall healthcare approach.
